Textron Aviation launches youth apprenticeship program in Kansas
The Wichita manufacturer has become the first aviation company in the state to offer paid high school apprenticeships in maintenance, avionics and engine work.
AVweb reported that Textron Aviation has become the first aviation company in Kansas to launch state-registered youth apprenticeships, offering high school students paid, hands-on training registered through the Kansas Office of Apprenticeships.
The program gives students entry at age 16 and allows them to earn while learning and complete their high school education at the same time. Depending on the track, the apprenticeships last as long as three years and combine classroom instruction with structured on-the-job training alongside Textron Aviation employees. The first apprentice cohorts began this autumn.
The three tracks
Textron Aviation is offering three apprenticeship pathways. The Airframe & Powerplant (A&P) and avionics programs are conducted with WSU Tech in Wichita. The engine-buildup program is offered with Tri County Tech in Oklahoma and based at Textron Aviation's facility in Independence, Kansas.
Students completing the programs receive a credential through the Kansas Office of Apprenticeships. Those in the A&P track also earn their Airframe & Powerplant certification, which provides a direct path into aviation maintenance work.
Workforce strategy
The program is part of a broader effort by Textron Aviation to address industry demand for skilled workers. According to AVweb, the company has already operated state-registered apprenticeship programs in maintenance, avionics, paint, CNC machining and tooling, with its first state-registered apprenticeship cohort beginning in 2023.
Dr. Sheree Utash, president of WSU Tech, said that "Youth apprenticeships are exactly the kind of opportunity we need more of. Students are gaining real skills, earning while they learn and building a direct path into high-demand aviation careers. That is good for students, good for industry and good for Kansas." Maggie Topping, senior vice president of Human Resources and Communications at Textron Aviation, said "The youth apprenticeship program is about opening the door earlier for students who can see themselves building a future in aviation."
